At Jack’s Old South BBQ there’s this awesome sign that lifts my spirits every time I see it. It says, “Count your blessings—recounts are ok.” Although a healthy spiritual life revolves around more than positive thoughts, dwelling on the blessings helps you put things in perspective and even keep things in perspective.
1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3 for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. —Colossians 3
A reminder is one thing, but keeping your mind on the goodness of God frees us from being dragged down by all that seeks to devour our hearts. There is nothing the devil wants more than for us to forget about all God has done, is doing, and will do for those that put their trust in God. Mary, the mother of Jesus, does this perfectly in her song of praise to God as she accepts her role as the one who will bring forth the Lord into our midst (Luke 1.46–55).
Inventory the work of God in your life—remember to look back to the places you might have missed where God was there—and be grateful for everything (especially your salvation). Count it up. Then, count it again.
