I heard a bunting from the balcony in St. Simons. I wasn’t sure what kind, but I just knew it was a bunting. As we were on the way down to the beach with Laney for her first experience in the sand, I heard him again. I looked up and sure enough there was the Painted Bunting you see in the picture below. I’d never seen one! And I was so happy. Just think: had I not seen it, I might not have ever known. I’m so thankful that I could put that voice with this beautiful sight.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. —1 John 5
Like the song says, “And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” People have heard of Christians and they may even know a little bit about Christians. But when you see faithfulness, you know you’ve just met a Christian. Genuine faith moves us, inspires us, and even motivates us. When we can match what we’ve heard with what we see and experience—just like that Painted Bunting—we know we’ve been in the presence of the real thing.
Nobody cares for a fake. No one has time for a knock-off. Deep down, we all want to have what’s real. If you want to see God, draw close through faithfulness. If you want others to see God, then be faithful. Give people a joyful moment: let them match the love they’ve heard about with the people that possess it. Be a Christian.
