Awake, O Sleeper

Brown-headed Nuthatches are cute little birds—zipping around and making noises that sound like squeak toys for dogs. My girls and I were outside looking at the flowers Ashley had planted and a Nuthatch flew right up above our heads! He landed on the dark side of the feeder, where the evening sun’s rays couldn’t quite reach (see the pic below). It took me a minute, then confirmation came. A flying squeak toy indeed.

13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” —Ephesians 5

Jesus is the Great Light, shining upon that which is dark and dead and making it light and alive. We live in evil days (and have for sometime) and we need the Light to show us the way, the truth, and the life that God desires each of us to live. We’re meant to live into a potential that is attainable. That potential is bright and shining in Jesus Christ.

Let the Light in, let Jesus reveal how dark life is—not only around you but within you. Just own it: we all have dark sides in our life. The trick is to welcome within you a resurrection light; a morning Son that shines with new life within our hearts. So, hear the call anew today, “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
