I’m excited about Laney becoming more mobile, but every parent laughs at me and says, “Soon, you’ll be eating those words.” I don’t care. I like watching her move and grow. The best part is watching her play in the middle of the floor. Only so many minutes go by before either Ashley or I one is down there playing with her. It’s too much fun! Surrounded by toys, she looks around and thinks about which one to grab. Sometimes, she’ll decide on one that’s just out of reach. She’ll reach way out and then spring back because it’s either too hard or too far away. She’ll get there, though. She just needs to keep reaching.
18 and I will be your father,
and you shall be my sons and daughters,

As Christians, we’re just children who’ve been set in the middle of the world with all the wonderful spiritual gifts and graces from God that we could want nearby, we just have to reach. Growing in Christian faith can be hard at times—almost disheartening—because we hear about all the wonderful things God has done for us and will do for us if we will just have faith. But there is a little reach involved. None of us were designed to sit in the middle of our spiritual lives and have everything brought to us or done for us. If so, we’d never grow in our faith or have any responsibility whatsoever. But God has so graciously done the very best thing for us and our growth: He’s gotten down on the floor through Jesus Christ in order to play with His children. There are times when characteristics of the spiritual life are too far away and He’s there to bring them in. But we all must go from being help-less to being help-ful. After all, we have been endowed with the Holy Spirit in order to assist God with drawing the world back into relationship with it’s Creator. To do that, we’re going to have to reach. And through reaching, learn, and through learning, grow, and through growing become the children God intends to carry out a mission of transformation.
Understand today that God has gotten down on the floor to play, interacting and having fun with you. But you need to reach…
