Plants are SO cool! In the photo below, where once there was a branch that proved to be useless and was removed, there is a new and vibrant branch that has grown and reached up high in its place. The whole plant benefits from such a strong shoot. It’s a good thing that old shoot is gone.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. (John 15:1, 2 NABRE)
When we look at our spiritual lives and wonder why we haven’t grown in different areas, often times it boils down to whether or not we have pruned away places that needed new growth. We keep trying to do the same old things but to no avail. God wants to cut away places in our life that aren’t contributing to our growth. There is new growth that needs to take place so that the whole spiritual body can benefit from it. That new shoot might take in more light or provide more nutrients. We won’t ever know until we let the vine grower clean out the old places.
What needs to be pruned for you? Will you let God take the shears to your soul? Placing yourself at the mercy of the vine grower means that you trust him with what is best. Let him do his work and before you know it, there will be new life and growth that will spring forth from an old place.
